Types of Phone Display
TFT LCD- (Thin Film Transistor technology)
These are the most common type of Display unit are used in mobile phone. TFT LCDs gives you good quality Camera images in higher resolution. As compared to the earlier generation LCD displays. However, their limitation lies in narrow viewing angles and poor visibility in direct light or sunlight.
Large TFT Display consume more power and are not Phone Battery friendly. But since these are cheaper display and most of the time these come in budget phone and lower-end-smartphone.
IPS LCD- (In Place Switching)
IPS LCDs are the next level of TFT Display. If you compare IPS vs TFT Display than IPS LCD’s are much better than TFT Displays with wider angle view and lower power battery consumption. Which leads to improved much Battery life.
IPS-LCD are costilier than normal TFT-LCD display and mostly it comes only in higher-end-smartphones. A higer resolution (640 x 960 pixels) version of the IPS LCD displays is Apple iPhone 4 and is called Retina Display. Because of its excellent image picture quality.
Resistive Touchscreen LCD
Touchscreen LCD Display are of two type-Resistive and Capacitive. Resistive Touchscreen contain two layer of conductive material with a very small gap between them and act as a resistance. When it is touched with a finger the two layer meet at the point of touch. Thus making a circuit at a point of touch. This information is detected by the Phone Processor and passed on the OS triggering an action at the point of touch.
This screen are not as responsive touchscreen as compared to capacitive touchscreen. Capacitive touchscreen are often stylus to identify the point of touch accurately. This screen are used in lower-end smartphone and budget smartphone.
Capacitive Touchscreen LCD
Capacitive Touchscreen are built with a thin layer of conductive material, such as copper or Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), printed onto the underside of the Display’s Insulating outer layer. When a finger touches the screen, a small electrical charge is drawn to the point of contract. Which is detected by the smartphone processor and it instruct the phone operating system to trigger an event or action accordingly.
This screen are much better and responsive to human touch when it compare to resistive touchscreen. The user experience of touch is much better and it is used in most higher-end-smartphone.
OLED stand for Organic Light Emitting Diode it is the new technology for phone display. This screens are brighter, more suffient , thinner and better Refresh Rate and contract than LCD.
In OLED technology a layer of organic material (carbon-based) which is placed between two conducting thing (an anode and a cathode), which are put between the glass top plate (seal) and the glass-bottom plate (substrate).
When the electric pulce passes or a applied, between the two conducting sheets, electro-luminescent light is produced directly from the organic material sandwiched between.
AMOLED stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode. It is type of OLED display for smartphone. The ‘active matrix’ part refer to the driving electronic, or the TFT layer. When you display an image, you actually display in line by line as you can also change one line at a time.
An AMOLED uses the TFT which contain the phone storage capacitor which maintains the line pixel states and enables large sizes (large resolution) display.
AMOLED display are now getting the mainstream and most of the latest high-end smartphone like Oneplus 9pro are comes with AMOLED display. If you pay out little extra my suggestion is go to AMOLED Display over TFT LCDs.
Super AMOLED Display
Super AMOLED Display is a advance version of AMOLED display which is primarily developed by Samsung. This display is constructed with touch sensor on the Display itself, as opposed to creating a separate touch-sensitive layer (as in capacitive touch screen). This display make it the thinnest display technology on the market.
Super AMOLED Display are currently only present in samsung devices. Samsung recent’s top of the line smartphone galaxy S20 Ultra comes with super AMOLED.
Retina Display is a term used by Apple for its high resolution. It means that the pixel density on a screen is so high that the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance.
It allows the screen to to shows more detail and improve the viewing experience. Because the viewing distance is different for each device, the number of pixel per inch (PPI) used to achieve Retina quality is Different.
